In the ‘heart of it all’ football season is over for 2008. Congratulations to the six state champions.

Friday, November 28 Divisions II, IV and VI played in Massillon. Divison II winner Sylvania Southview out lasted a gritty Cincinnati Anderson team. Division IV had a tough and well coached Archbishop Alter school, from just outside Dayton, holding The Big Red from Steubenville to only 6 points. Delphos St. John’s, near Lima in Northwest Ohio, beat Bascom Hopewell-Loudon 34-14 in the Division VI game. Junior QB Wes Ulm ran for 199 yards on the day.

Saturday, November 29 in Canton, Divisions I, III and V were matched up. Division III had Aurora beat a fast Columbus Eastmoor Academy squad 21-10. Division V Youngstown Ursuline shutout Findlay Liberty Benton 21-0. In the big school Division I, the Cleveland St. Ignatius Wildcats won their 10th state title, holding off the Elder Panthers from Cincinnati 28-20. St. “I” started strong with a 21-0 lead at halftime. The two top juniors from Elder certainly did not give up. The Mr. Ohio runner-up, Class of 2010 QB Mark Miller, threw for nearly 400 yards and the junior WR O’Connor had 15 receptions for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns. Look out for the Wildcats again next year. They are just loaded with returning players, led by LB Scott McVey.

It’s the great 8 this coming weekend in Pennsylvania.

In Quad A in the West is Wilson West Lawn vs Cumberland Valley in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Bethel Park vs State College (Three of these are from the same conference) – in the East is North Penn vs Neshaminy in the top bracket and in the bottom bracket is Washington vs Liberty.

In Triple A in the West is Strong Vincent vs Thomas Jefferson (defending state champion) in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Manheim Central vs West York – in the East is Berwick vs Selinsgrove in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Rustin vs Archbishop Wood.

In Double A in the West is Aliquippa vs Karn City in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Wilmington vs Central Martinsburg – in the East is West Catholic vs Dunmore in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Lancaster Catholic vs Mt. Carmel (Most wins in Pennsylvania football history)

In Single A in the West is Windber vs Clairton in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Cameron County vs Farrell – in the East is Riverside vs Schuylkill Haven in the top of the bracket and in the bottom bracket is Bishop McCort vs Steel-High (defending state champion)

Columbus meets Cincinnati in Dayton

The Elder Panthers (#5) meet up with Pickerington Central (#2) in the Division I state semi-final at Welcome Stadium 7:00 Saturday night. The Panthers took two overtimes to get past Colerain. The Cincinnati teams have had a much tougher battle lately getting through to the title game. This year will be no different.

Coach Jay at Pick-town Central has top D1 talent in each class. The top D1 recruit for Coach Ramsey and the Panthers just may be a sophomore, Jacob Lindsey LB at 6’2″ and 200 lbs. In that same Class of 2011 on the other side of the ball, look for the the big OT, 6’3″ and 300 lbs Aric Barker making way for the Tigers and a shot at a undefeated season.

Anderson (unranked) meets up with DeSales (#1) 7:30 Friday night. DeSales beat up on Coach Giesting’s injured Redskins 10 weeks earlier 38-17. The Redskins should be healthy and ready to go. The Redskins had a nice come from behind victory last week over a tough Winton Woods Warriors team. Look for Anderson junior Class of 2010 OT Andrew Norwell at 6’6″ and 270 lbs, he should not be hard to spot.

If you are going to recruit seriously in Pennsylvania this year, expect to spend some time at Sto Rox high school to evaluate their two great juniors.

While you are there if you want a good meal, I would suggest you go to Hyeholde Restaurant in Coraopolis. It is located at 1516 Coraopolis Heights Rd. – 412-264-3116. It’s an older place with “just great food” in a great atmosphere. If you aren’t into something that nice there is always my favorite Primante Brothers.
